Why lye?

The word "saponification" means to "make soap." Soap is made from using water, lye and various fats. By mixing the lye, water and fats (oils and butters), saponification occurs. The lye saponifies, reacting with the fatty acids to create soap. Soap requires lye for this reaction to take place, rendering moisturizing glycerin that is so wonderful for your skin. This chemical reaction creates a finished product contains no lye.
